Oh, the beautiful Akha bracelets! They are handcrafted in Thailand by Akha artisans, using semi-precious stones, vegan leather, and engraved charms. Worn alone or stacked, these bracelets go with everything, and I'm thrilled to be carrying the newest Akha collection.

Giving Back Blog March 2019

In February 2019 I attended a New York City Trade Show. This is where I found the products of Marquet and learned their story. It fit perfectly with Scooch A Mi’s mission. Marquet was born from the idea that everyone should have access to work that provides a sustainable living and promotes the longevity of ancient craftsmanship.

In 2011, Marquet was created as a place where people can purchase gifts like those found in open-air markets around Southeast Asia. David Atlas, Founder of Marquet, traveled through Southeast Asia on a post-college trip and saw a need for helping artisans market and sell their products to the Western world. Living in remote regions of the country, many families must make a tough choice – being with their families or moving to the city to earn a living.

David scoured the markets, seeking beautifully crafted handmade products. When he found something he liked, David visited the artisan groups in person creating real partnerships with these artisans. Marquet helps artisan families build a sustainable lifestyle. The company strives to use local labor for all projects, including product development, design, and photography.

The Story of the Akha Bracelet

The Akha people are indigenous to South-East Asia and live throughout Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Eastern China. Marquet’s artisan collective employs over one hundred crafts people, and offers both full-time and part-time opportunities, as well as the opportunity to work from home. This offers maximum flexibility for the artisans to work around their own schedules and other personal or family commitments. A central and highly productive workshop also provides a great social environment where the sound of laughter is abundant as artisans are happy to come work together in a relaxed and fun setting.

Every Akha bracelet is hand-beaded using traditional methods by an artisan group in Thailand. The bracelets are made using semi-precious stones includingturquoise, jasper, tiger’s eye, amethyst, howlite and aventurine along with crystal beads for brilliant shine. The fastenings are made from vegan leather and are adjustable up to an additional 2.5” with multiple sizing options to provide the best fit for anyone.

We are proud to offer you these beautiful handcrafted bracelets at Scooch A Mi Boutique.
